Presentation planning/things to discuss

This post is documenting the thoughts and notes i have made in preparation to doing the presentation which will outline to my tutor and my peers what i intend to do with my project focusing on written and the where to possibly go with my practical.

Approaches to exploring my theme

- Album Covers
- Posters

Visual Devices

Colour, Shape, Texture, Light, Tone

I have looked into the idea of being able to see the music within the image and have realised that this links to the neurological condition of 'synesthesia' so this could perhaps be something to discuss for my presentation. Im not sure whether to take this idea forward yet as it could get complicated with the nature of the subject. So with that in mind i might do more in depth blog posts on the topic but only if the advice i get it if its a relevant subject to do further research into.

Synesthsia - Its a condition in which ones sensory perceptions are involuntarily unified - meaning sight, colour and sound come together.

People who have this are known as synesthetes

- A perceptual phenomenon
- Neurological

Seeing colours and patterns based off music is one of the most common varieties also called 'chromaesthesia'

e.g Billy Joel, Kanye West, Lady Gaga, Frank Ocean and Mary J Blige.

Benefits to doing the project (practical sense)

- Helps me understand more about the aesthetics of an image (music related).
- Better understanding of what makes a good album cover.
- Need to produce work that doesn't rely on just portraiture.
- Because i want to simply produce work that looks like music/sound or at least carries a strong aesthetic to appearing as though it does.

Genres that encapsulate this way of thinking in design terms are (in my opinion)

- Psychedelia - Relevant designers - Wes Wilson, Victor Mascoso, Stanley Mouse, Alton Kelley
- Jazz - Relevant example - Mati Klarwein (bitches brew, Miles Davis)
- Rock
- Punk
- Metal

A possible theme to discuss...

'How image can convey the tone and atmosphere of music'

Basic theme...

'What makes a good music based piece of design such as an album cover or a gig poster'

Synesthesia article

This is a very brief post with a link to a website/article about Synesthesia. I have made notes briefly elsewhere on another post about my findings as i have planned to include it into my presentation however the problem is that i am unsure on whether this is a good or even relevant topic/subject to be exploring. For now here is that website.

Module Briefing

Reading

- Stephanie Black - Illumination through Illustration
- Lynda Barry - Syllabus (where are images found)

'INVESTIGATE YOUR INTERESTS AND YOUR PRACTICE'

'WHAT DOES RESEARCH MEAN TO YOU AS A PRACTITIONER'

BLOG - 2000 word limit. Be concise and selective with what you write - Label 601

Consider methodology - Approaches/lenses

Relevant methods for me

- Practice
- Interviews
- Aesthetic
- Psychoanalytical
- Object - Analysis

My initial idea

' Seeing music within image' - In the context of album covers for example.

Focusing on aesthetic, analysing design - components of colour, shape, texture etc.

It will help me understand how to produce work (in a practical sense) that quite simply 'looks like music'

Idea - Look at the 'Rhythm' issue of Varoom - could be useful

Important/key dates coming up

1st November - Practical response peer review

26th November - Interim draft submission - eeh by gum...

29th November - Module Re-briefing

My Supervisor - Jamie

Tutorial - Preparation for COP 3

Well its quite scary to think but with this post i am doing my first blogpost for COP 3! Hikarumba!!!

This is a thought that daunts me hugely as this one is the big one but not to discredit the other years with COP of course.

My main aim for this final year and the topic to research and just basically the whole project is for me to enjoy it. The last thing i need/want is to be stuck on something that i wont be motivated to do as i get bogged down and stressed at the best of times. I know even now that my topic/area of research will be music based/music related as that is where my practice sits pretty much now i believe.

One idea is to research into the importance of Vinyl records and in particular the certain resurgence it has had over the past couple of years.

I had a mini tutorial with Jamie a couple of weeks back which gave me an opportunity to talk about what i potentially wanted to research into even though at the time and so extent now i'm not entirely sure what i want to do.

These are the notes i got from the session:

- Commodity Fetishism
- Walter Benjamin (in the age of mechanisation)
- John Berger (ways of seeing)
- Tactile, physical objects and their value
- William Morris

Another brilliant tip was to also  utilise the colleges J-store where you can access an archive i believe and to also make use of Google Scholar.

Another thing that came up was the idea that i would quite like to make my own album covers as a practical side of the research, making up fictitious bands/artists to illustrate. One thing thats really funny with is is that me and my good friend Isaac have been coming up with fictitious band names for the past two years and basically the most ridiculous the better so i could either take some from the extensive lists that me and him have amassed or i have a go at doing them myself for this project. That is if thats what i want to do of course, i may have other ideas just yet.

One final thought is how i cant really relate to this idea of the tactile nature of a record and ultimately being a record collector because i simply haven't got one, however i do keep thinking i really should get a record player, we have one for the family back home but i would like one for myself. However this is no excuse as i can interview people and go into record shops something i think i should do more in general not just for the sake of this research project. However like i said this is not final in terms of the related subject just yet i will be thinking more about it in the coming days and weeks.
